AUDITION--Women's Chorus

We hope you will consider joining the Indianapolis Women's Chorus! Auditions are held periodically during the year. Information about auditioning and participation requirements are below.Please contact us if you are interested or have questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement?
All women interested in auditioning must be 18 years or older.

What will I sing in an audition?
Auditionees will be asked to sing music that will be provided by Artistic Director Scott Buchanan. This is not intended to be a high stress audition and is arranged to allow for establishing a singer's range and ability.

Do I have to be able to read music?
No. We welcome all skill levels. We recommend that members tape record rehearsals to facilitate learning. All concert music is memorized and musical excellence is a PRIMARY value.

What kind of music do you sing?
We perform music across time - from medieval to pop. Our concerts include an entertaining and diverse mix of styles as well as theatrical elements. There are times that we may have a season that has a singular theme.

What kinds of women are in the chorus?
We take great pride in the diversity of our group. We are lesbian, straight, bi-sexual and transgendered women of all ages (18-60+) who encourage diverse ethnicities and religious traditions.

When and where do you rehearse?
We rehearse Sundays, 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd Street, from late August to early June. Visitors are welcome.

What’s the attendance policy?
Members are generally permitted to miss a maximum of two rehearsals during each 10-12 week concert period. Members missing more than 2 rehearsals are required to sing for the director to ensure that they know their parts.

What about costumes?
Chorus members purchase their own performance wear. This includes a formal concert costume that consists of black loose-fitting pants with simple tunic. This is made to fit your measurements and costs about $175.

Is there a fee?
Dues are $85.00 for non-voting membership and $100.00 for voting membership. Membership dues must be paid by the rehearsal 2 weeks prior to the first concert or if on a payment plan, all payments must be current.  If a member should choose to become a Conductor's Circle member and contribute $150 annually these fees are fully tax-deductible, and are listed in our concert programs.  Normal dues are not tax-deductible.

What if I can’t afford it?
Financial assistance or payment plans are available on a limited basis. We do not want money to be a barrier to participation. Please contact an Indianapolis Women's Chorus Executive Officer for more information, or send an online inquiry.

What’s your annual schedule like?
The season includes three concerts annually plus community performances such as Penrod Arts Fair, Indianapolis Fever games, and more.
