IMC History

Now in its twenty-third season, the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus begins a local choral renaissance and a new exciting chapter in its history under the leadership of its sixth artistic director, Greg Sanders.  
  
“The Indianapolis Men's Chorus supports and embodies the mission of Crossroads Performing Arts, Inc., (CPA) and through its voice:
  • provides a musical home and extended family for gay men of Indiana;
  • educates the public in an evocative, non-threatening manner;
  • empowers its audiences to explore the richness of cultural diversity;
  • disperses the shadows of hatred and bigotry through the light of its
    music;
  • instills pride in its members and audiences;
  • inspires a sense of heart, hope, and healing in its community.”


In addition to three regularly scheduled performance weekends in December, March and June, the Chorus also appears in several artistic and community events during the year. including:
  • the IMA’s Penrod Arts Fair
  • the Indianapolis AIDSwalk
  • the Indianapolis World AIDS Day remembrance
  • the Damien Center’s annual SPOTLIGHT event
  • the CircleCity IndyPride Parade and Festival


IndyVisible is a small ensemble of IMC members, which serves as the outreach organization for the IMC. Because of their smaller size, IndyVisible is a more flexible group, usually ranging in size from eight  to sixteen members. 


In addition to entertaining their hometown audiences, the IMC and IndyVisible have performed in several cities including:
  • Muncie, Richmond, Bloomington, Columbus, Ft. Wayne, and West Lafayette, IN;
  • Cincinnati, OH (in joint concerts with both MUSE: Cincinnati Women’s Choir, and Vocal Point!);
  • Louisville, KY (in a joint  concert with Inner Voices);
  • Minneapolis, MN (in a joint concert with the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus);
  • Chicago, IL (in  joint concerts with the Windy City Gay Chorus, and the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus);
  • Washington, DC (in a joint concert with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C.);
  • St Louis, MO (in a joint concert with the Gateway Men’s Chorus);
  • Bloomington, IN (in a joint concert with the Quarryland Men’s Chorus);
  • West Lafayette, IN (in a joint concert with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club);
  • at GALA Festivals in Denver, CO; Tampa, FL; San Jose, CA; and Montreal, Canada;
  • and at the 2005 Piccolo Spoleto festival in Charleston, SC. 

 
The IMC has also performed with:
  • the Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra
  • Dance Kaleidoscope
  • local artists Jeannie Logan, Brenda  Williams, Bill McKinley, Steven Stolen, and David Letterman’s mom (Dorothy)
  • the Dos Trochaderos ballet
  • folk singer/songwriter Holly Near
  • cabaret artist Ann Hampton Callaway
  • the Indianapolis Symphonic Orchestra with Sandy Patti, Gary Beach, and Christina Bianco in the ISO’s Pops Series production of Hello, Dolly! 


The IMC has released three CD recordings:
  • The IMC’s premiere CD recording, No One Is Alone, was released in 1996.
  • Their second CD, Making the Season Bright, a live recording featuring music from several IMC Holiday concerts, was released in 2002.
  • Their 15th Anniversary CD, Our Journey Continues, was released in 2005.
